Welcome one, and welcome all to the 26th installment of the Finton’s Frolic right opinion zone. Last week’s extravaganza popped off and killed it with views so let’s hope that this one does the same. I had no idea there were so many mentally unstable people that supported Arsenal, surely that has to be the case with you if you have ever read an FF. Well, scratch that, yes I did. I think we’re all mentally unstable because of Arsenal.
Anyways, today I will be discussing the short gap between the summer and January transfer windows. Of course, every team will have to cope with the positives and negatives provided by the market’s transformation, but we don’t care about anyone else to be honest. The question is, how will Arsenal be directly impacted by the shift? The undisputable, correct answer is down below.
On the face of things, the short gap appears to be a good thing on the front of selling players. With Arsenal clearly keen on selling a very long list of individuals surplus to requirements, if the club is unable to boot them out this summer, the wait to do so, where they can try again is only a few more months.
Guys like Lucas Torreira, Sokratis, Sead Kolasinac and others are proving to be a tricky sell as no one is willing to match their extortionate wages. After this multi-month, mega-window there will be another, regular one month long one that will help sides across the globe sell players that they want to get rid of. So, on that side of player trading, the small gap is a good thing, but what do the COVID-induced changes mean for the acquiring of players?
My hypothesis is that many sides will not be participating in the Winter window. In order to avoid making reactionary purchases that end up failing catastrophically, teams will stow their wallets away. I presume Arsenal will be one of the very many teams that will spend nothing in January.
The fact is, there just isn't a great deal of dough out there at the moment. Times are tough and money is tight. I mean, shit, you know when the billionaires are taking a financial hit something is really wrong. Teams will want to hold onto any extra cash for the next Summer window. The only signings I could really see happening are ones like the ever-brilliant Cedric Soares one.
In a nutshell, the tiny gap will certainly have effects on everybody, including our beloved club. On the one hand, it’s a good opportunity to sell players that did not quite finalize a departure in the summer. On the other, the lack of costly expenditures will leave football fans as a whole inquiring why the window is even a thing.
Frankly, if I was a club owner, I’d spend my money now. It’s too hard to tell if something needs fixed at the halfway point of a season. Generally speaking, if a club tries to fix something in January, the assets available are not as good as those available in the Summer, so spend now, Arsenal!
