What up, pimps?
Welcome one and all to the 20th edition of the Finton’s Frolic right opinion zone. This is kind of a trademark installment so that’s pretty cool. Marking this will be the senior editor, Rob Worthington and I covering the editing and posting of all articles for this site for the next week. The chief editor, Alfie Culshaw, is taking a much deserved vacation so forgive Rob and I if the editing isn’t up to it’s typically perfect standard.
Ironically, Alfie is venturing to Scotland for his vacay and will be donning a kilt whilst sipping irn bru and nibbling haggis. On the subject of Scotland and the country of braveheart, Arsenal’s very own braveheart will be the subject of today’s piece; Kieran Tierney.
As said in the title of this self-proclaimed mesmeric masterpiece, Tierney is well and truly a player for the average, every day, British football fan. The former Celtic man has an extraordinarily humble personality and a bang average look about him. He really does not look any different to a guy who would be working some working-class factory job at all. No special trim, no flashy personality, just an out and out football loving Scot. And for that reason, he is the ultimate person to resonate with for the British football fan.
As an American working shoulder to shoulder with a plethora of Brits on this site, I’ve come to know what the pale islanders know and like. Along with words like “extortionate” and “despondent” in place of normal human being phrases like “too pricey” or “sad”, they also like quiet lads and lassies who go about their business in an esteemed, reserved and professional manner.
Americans completely contrarily, usually have a shine for players with massive personalities. In football that would be guys like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, P-E Aubameyang and Neymar. Outside of our sport, guys like Cam Newton (quarterback for the Carolina Panthers) and Floyd Mayweather (boxer) are other animated individuals who most Americans hold dearly. Many Brits would find their flamboyance a bit too seasoned for their sensitive pallets.
Luckily, Tierney is basically a bowl of cottage cheese. Not much flavor but consistent. In fact, many believe he is the heir to Nacho Monreal. The Spanish, former gunner who now plays his trade at Real Sociedad was known for his incredible consistency and now it appears as if Tierney is starting to follow suit. Like Monreal, he doesn’t have an exuberant personality or a car that looks like the underside of a CD, he just shows up to training and does what he does best match in and out.
In truth, while I do personally like charismatic characters because I find them entertaining, Tierney has also won me over and like the Brits, I’ve taken a shine to him. In the current squad next to Auba and Pepe, he is my favorite player. He is so unlike any of the other footballers in this day in age and just seems to be around 20-years after his time. But despite this, the man who plays with his shirt tucked in while no one else does still fits perfectly into a modern footballing side.
Tierney’s good ol’ boy personality compiled with his impressive football talent have not only made him a British fan favorite but an out and out thoroughly loved gunner. He’s already managed a trophy in his first season with the club, let’s hope he can keep on picking them up. And mark my words, one day he’ll be the one lifting it. Maybe he’ll take it back to the Emirates in his beloved Tesco bag.
